Senior Collapses After Spending Night Waiting for Walk Light

An elderly woman collapsed in downtown Nut Mountain after waiting all night for a walk light to turn green. Her family wants to know why the pedestrian light never switched from Don't Walk to Walk.

Eighty-three year-old Harriett Herdman collapsed from exhaustion and dehydration while heading homr from mailing a pie to her sister Bernice in Feddlemen. Paramedics responded to a call shortly after 5 AM Friday morning when Mrs. Herdman was found collapsed on the pavement and muttering obscenities.

“She gave it a valiant effort to wait for that light,” town counsellor Brad Guntrum said. “Unfortunatly it's the Town's policy to turn off walk lights after 9:00 PM to discourage pedestrians.” Guntrum and others at Town Hall believe that most criminals are pedestrians, although he couldn't cite any statistics on the matter.

Friends are worried that the incident will cause the elderly Mrs. Herdman to drive again. "She can't see over the dash," said Edwina Stanislawski, who lives at 224 Maple Drive. "She once drove for a week with a garbage can and a dead skunk wedged onto her hood. I think she just goes on instinct."

Mrs. Herdman is expected to make a full recovery after she's treated for exposure and a broken toe at the Elmview hospital.
